Home to Britain's largest natural cave entrance, at Castleton, long nicknamed the Devil's Arse before adopting the tidier name Peak Cavern.
An 11th-century castle above Castleton, built soon after the Norman Conquest as the seat of the feudal Honour of Peverel, with views across the Hope Valley.
